
Gaius Julius Caesar was born on July 13, 100 BC in Rome. He was a celebrated Roman general and statesman. Among his accomplishments he conquered Gaul (58-50 BC), he won a victory in the Civil War of 49-46 BC, and was dictator from 46-44 BC. He changed the Roman republic into a monarchy and a truly Mediterranean empire. He was launching a series of political and social reforms when he was assassinated by a group of nobles, as he was on his way to Pompey's Theater where the Senate convened. The day was March 15, 44 B.C. which is known as 'The Ides of March'.
