Chinese companies and univercities manufacture new Operating System similar to Microsoft Windows98 for their own needs
Institute of high Technology of Beijing has announced that with co-operation of 18 universities and companies will develop a Computer Operating System similar with Windows98.
The plan is to break the “monopoly of foreign office software,” which we believe may be code for ‘Microsoft,’ and to this end the Beijing IT Industry Promotion Center announced two initiatives, parts of this project ?YangFan? and ?Qihang? that means ?sailing? intended to produce a Win98 level OS within a year. Win98 may seem like old news, but it’s still useful for older, lower spec and cheaper machines. And if China did happen to produce an equivalent that had somewhat less bolloxed memory management
Operating System ?YangFan v1.0? has been already developed and approved from Chinese Government to install it in some government?s agencies. The new project will be upgrade and have some new features and compatibility with Microsoft Office 2000.
The exact nature of the software is however unclear. If the software is intended to be simply compatible with Word and Office 2000 file formats then the task isn’t huge. But it is a nice try to see a new project the question remain about the core of this new Operating Sytem will be Linux-based, given that China’s been quite keen on Linux in between taking money from Steve Ballmer? Or is it a Dos clone, or something else? We will support this and we will like to hear news about this soon.
