Imerovigli, is a charming village built in the lip of the crater (300m above the caldera) in a distance 2km from Fira, in Santorini Island. The name derives from the words day (meaning imera in Greek) and lookout post (vigla in Greek language) because at the days of piracy the place used as daily observatory to look out for pirates or unwelcome visitors to the island. The highest point of the village offers a superb view of the volcano and the spectacular sunset.

In front of Imerovigli there is an enormous rock. This is Scaros which used to be part of the land and had a castle built on it until the early 1800s. The castle guarded the western entrance to the island from attacks and was never defeated during the 600 years of its existence. The path to this castle is offered for exciting walks, although a bit tiring ones (It is almost one hour on foot to go and return). From Scaros there is a path leading to the church of Theoskepasti, built on a rock, where you may enjoy the stunning view.

Imerovigli is much quieter and relaxing option than Fira but offers a variety of hotels and rented rooms, restaurants and bars for your pleasant staying. There is also a selection of shops. However if you prefer the alternative choice of Fira’s entertainment, you are only a 20-minutes walk away, or 5 minutes with the car.
